Los interogativos

Buenos días estudiantes,

I hope all of you are fine.

Today we are going to learn some question words, we will also learn to make interrogative sentences with those words. In this lesson we will learn how to ask questions in Spanish. First, I analyse the structure of the questions with an answer of 'yes' or 'no', which in Spanish is the same as that of the normal sentences. The only difference is the intonation, that is, the variation in the tone of voice.

Next, we will se how the questions in which the answer you are looking for is information are constructed in Spanish, which are always introduced by an interrogative (what, who, which, where, when, how, how much or why).

Los Interogativos


Interrogatives are used to ask about things, events, or people. If you look closely, the interrogatives always carry question marks at the beginning and end of the sentence. They also all have an accent

In Spanish, there may be several ways to ask the same question. 

¿María habla español?

Does Maria speak Spanish?

¿Habla María español?

Does Maria speak Spanish?

¿Habla español María?

Does Maria speak Spanish?

The following questions mean exactly the same thing:

Does María speak Spanish?

¿María habla español?

¿Habla María español?

¿Habla español María?

Possible answers would be:

Sí, María habla español.

No, María no habla español.

Another method of forming questions is to add a tag question to the end of a statement.

María habla español, ¿no?

Maria speaks Spanish, doesn’t she?

María habla español, ¿verdad?

Maria speaks Spanish, right?

[Note the inverted question mark that begins each question.]

Modo o forma:

¿Cuál? 

• ¿Cuál es tu hermano?
• ¿Cuáles diputados son los responsables?
• ¿Cuál es tu nombre?

¿Cuánto?

Quantity: The word how much can vary to; How much, how much, how many and how many depending on the noun that comes after.

• ¿Cuántos años tienes? (masculino plural)
• ¿Cuántas amigas tienes? (femenino plural)
• ¿Cuántos bancos hay en la zona central? (masculino plural)
• ¿Cuánto dinero traes? (masculino singular)

¿Quién?

Persona:

• ¿Quién es el presidente de Rusia?
• ¿Quiénes hicieron eso?
• ¿Quien llegó primero a la meta?

¿Porqué?

    ¿Por qué? means “Why? (for what reason)”

    ¿Por qué estudias español?

    For what reason do you study Spanish?

   Possible answer:

   Porque es un requisito.

   Because it’s required.
